Sao Paolo, Brazil (CNN) -- A fire swept through a popular nightclub in southern Brazil on Sunday, killing at least 220 people, officials said.
The death toll was expected to climb as firefighters continued to pull bodies from the Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria, said Col. Adilomar Silva, the regional coordinator of civil defense.
Most of those killed appeared to have died of smoke inhalation, he said. Hundreds are believed to have been injured, though an exact count was not immediately available.
Many people were trampled in the panic to leave the club, one security guard told CNN affiliate Band News.
Police described it as the worst tragedy ever to affect Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state, Band News said.
The fire started at about 2 a.m. after the acoustic insulation in the Kiss nightclub caught fire, Silva said.
There was a pyrotechnics show going on inside the club when the fire started. Authorities stopped short of blaming it for the blaze, saying the cause was still under investigation.
The incident called to mind a 2003 nightclub fire in Rhode Island where pyrotechnics used by the heavy metal band Great White ignited a blaze that killed more than 90 people.
Pyrotechnics were also involved in a 2004 night club fire in Argentina that killed 194 people and a 2009 explosion at a night club in Russia that left more than 100 dead.
The Kiss nightclub is popular with young people in Santa Maria, drawing between 2,000 and 3,000 people a night on the weekends.
The blaze broke out during a weekend when students were celebrating the end of summer. Students at many Brazilian universities return to school on Monday.
Santa Maria is home to the Federal University of Santa Maria as well as a number of other private universities and colleges.
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who has been in Chile for a regional summit, was expected to come to Rio Grado do Sul, the state government said in a statement.

Nov 30 (Reuters) - Actor Paul Walker, best known for his roles in the "Fast and the Furious" action movies, died on Saturday in a car crash in Southern California, his publicist said.

Walker, 40, who has been in five of the six films about illegal street racing and heists, was a passenger in a friend's car and was attending a charity event, according to a message linked to his Twitter account.

"Sadly, I must confirm that Paul did pass away this afternoon in a car accident," Ame Van Iden, Walker's publicist, said in an email.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement that two people had been killed in a car accident in Valencia, a community in the city of Santa Clarita, at about 3:30 p.m. (6:30 p.m. ET).

Deputies arriving at the scene found the vehicle engulfed in flames. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said. The office did not provide the identities of the dead, and said the cause was under investigation.

Hey Guys

Today I´m adding a new type of classes on the blog which will work with text interpretation and reading. Calm down, I´m not stopping the videos or the songs, just increasing the number of different opportunities to study. In order to make it more attractive I´ll work with news and current topics.
Today I´ll start with something which recently happened in the US.

Twelve people killed at Washington Navy Yard

At least 12 people have been killed and at least four injured in a shooting at a naval installation in Washington DC.
A gunman was killed at the scene. Police were initially searching for two additional "potential" gunman but one has since been ruled out.
Shots were reported at 08:20 local time (12:20 GMT), and authorities have sealed off a swathe of south-east Washington DC.
President Barack Obama said he mourned "yet another mass shooting".
Police responded to reports of two additional suspects in the shooting at Washington Navy Yard, but have since cleared one of them, a white male in a tan short-sleeve military-style outfit.
A black male, 40-50 years of age and wearing olive kit and seen carrying a long gun, was still being sought.
